In 2016 Game & Fish Biologists stocked two native fish, Longfin and Speckled Dace into a fishless, 1 mile perennial section of Cottonwood Springs on the Prescott National Forest. Speckled Dace were stocked into the upstream portion of the spring and Longfin Dace were stocked into larger, downstream pools. In May 2017, biologists hiked the spring to evaluate the success of the stocking. Hundreds of fry were observed in the stocking pools and fish had moved 0.25 miles downstream from the original stocking pools. The Department is hopeful these fish will be recruited into the population and eventually create a self-sustaining population in Cottonwood Springs.
