A Day in the Field – Roundtail Chub Survey at Sycamore Creek

Sycamore Creek, a tributary to the Agua Fria River, is home to the native Roundtail Chub (Gila robusta). Last week, the Department surveyed a series of pools along Sycamore Creek and almost 100 chub were captured. This creek has seen a lot of change as high flow events through the canyon have washed away trees and moved boulders, yet we captured high numbers of chub and visually observed them throughout the surveyed reach.

Roundtail Chub were captured in this pool using dip nets. The evidence of recent floods is obvious based on the number of uprooted trees.

Captured Roundtail Chub were measured for length before they were returned to the stream.
